In addition to The Units of Study, students learn how words are built using a resource called Month-by-Month Phonics for Third Grade. The class also learns 20 new vocabulary words each month using the program Wordly Wise 3000.

- Reading to Learn (expository nonfiction)
- Character Studies (fiction books used to practice skills of prediction, character study, and interpretation)
- Research Clubs (learn how to gather, synthesize, and organize information)

- Crafting True Stories (personal narrative)
- The Art of Information Writing (students write a chapter book and learn how to organize their ideas into subtopics)
- Changing the World (persuasive speeches)
- Once Upon a Time (rewriting fairy tales to write scenes, develop characters, use story structure, and figurative language to convey mood)
